The tool, called a Trimble robotic total station (RTS), sits on a tripod and is used to survey large areas for accurate measurements and inspections. Contractors typically use the RTS to lay out tasks more efficiently.

The worker was surveying the area in front of a residence in the 3300 block of Arlene Avenue around 11 a.m. when the RTS malfunctioned, according a Dayton police report.

He left the RTS and went to his truck to get the materials to fix the tool. He turned around and noticed someone placing the RTS in the bed of a tan or gold pikcup truck, according to the report.
