HUBER HEIGHTS SCHOOLS
The summer rapidly is coming to a close. Students return to school on Wednesday, Aug. 11.
But before the new school year begins, I would like to take one last look back at the achievements of Valley Forge Elementary School during the 2009-10 school year. Valley Forge was built in 1970. It is one of the two schools in our district that provides preschool services. Enrollment at Valley Forge is approximately 554 students in grades PK to five.
There were many special activities and student assemblies for the Valley Forge staff and students last school year. Students learned about space during a hands-on experience provided by The Center of Science and Industry (COSI). Authors /illustrators Christopher and Jeannette Canyon met with students and promoted reading and writing. To welcome the Canyons, students decorated the halls of the school with handmade artwork depicting many of the Canyon’s books. Two different groups from Wayne High School came to Valley Forge to assist students in learning about different cultures. The Wayne High School Spanish Club helped students learn more about the Spanish people and their culture. The Wayne High School French Club explained to students the traditions associated with Mardi Gras. The Hampstead Players visited Valley Forge over the holidays and performed “A Christmas Carol.” Math nights for students in grade K to two and grades three to five brought together families to explore and have fun with math concepts.
The giving nature of the Valley Forge Patriots was evident on Veterans Day when staff and students hosted a luncheon for veterans. Entertainment during the luncheon included third-graders singing patriotic songs. Valley Forge staff and students also raised money for the American Cancer Society and collected food for the Fish Food Pantry.
Students also had a chance to demonstrate their individual talents. Aydrianne Hofschild and Shannon Masters represented Huber Heights City Schools at the regional science fair competition. Shannon also went to the state science fair competition and earned an excellent rating.
During the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Valley Forge, the chorus performed an original song and fifth-grader Peyton Young wrote and delivered an outstanding speech.
Valley Forge staff and students will have the opportunity to welcome a new face to the school in August. Mr. Kevin Cornell has been appointed as the new principal of Valley Forge. Formerly a teacher and math coach in Huber Heights, Cornell is looking forward to working with the Valley Forge school community.
