Medics attended to the victim, identified as James Douglas, 35, who lives in the near-by Arrow Wood sub-division. Douglas was transported by CareFlight to the hospital at 7 a.m. As of Sunday afternoon, Douglas was listed in critical condition.
Douglas was driving his ATV on Lindsey Road when he attempted to turn the vehicle on to Little Turtle Way. He lost control, was ejected from the ATV and the vehicle possibly rolled on top of him, deputies said.
Shelby County deputies are investigating the accident and say speed may be a factor in the crash.
Candice Campbell witnessed the accident and was the first to call 911 to report the crash.
“I saw the guy fly straight off his four-wheeler and he pretty much hit the concrete,” said Campbell. “It was a very bad, tragic accident.”
Campbell tended to Douglas, who she said rolled several feet after going airborne off the vehicle, before medics arrived on scene.Douglas was unconscious, but breathing, she said.
Campbell said the rural area in which she lives sees a lot of four-wheeler and dirt bike activity on the roadways. Sheriff’s deputies noted that it is illegal to operate such vehicles on the roads.
Douglas was not wearing a helmet, according to reports.
“These roads are meant for people to drive on, they aren’t meant for ATV’s and dirt bikes,” Campbell said.
Deputies are investigating the accident.
