Crews became aware of the problem around 10:30 p.m. Thursday and by 3 p.m. Friday gas service had been restored to half of the customers, said Natalie Hedde, spokeswoman for Vectren. The customers who have not been restored were not at home when Vectren came to restore service.
The gas provider said they believe the issue could have happened because of the rain the area received in the last 24-48 hours. Ongoing projects in the area could have made it easier for water to get into the lines, Hedde said.
The gas lines were shut down, purged and then service was restored.
The gas provider hopes to have the remaining customers back online by tonight.
