Hamilton man, 33, killed in weather-related crash that injures 3 others

Snow-covered roads on westbound I-74 were a contributing factor to a crash that claimed the life of a Hamilton man and injured three others Saturday afternoon.

Kevin J. Gutzwiller, 33, of Hamilton died after being trapped under the vehicle that driver Hannah L. May, 25, of Okeana, lost control of near the 161.5 milemarker around 4:40 p.m., according to a press release.

The vehicle left the roadway and rolled before coming to rest, inverted off the roadway.

According to the release, Gutzwiller sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Passenger Alyssa A Tucker, 22, of Cincinnati was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in critical condition. Tucker’s five-year-old son was also in the vehicle and was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. May was transported to Dearborn County Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries as well.

In addition to the snow-covered roads, an investigation revealed May’s vehicle was believed to have been going too fast for the existing weather and roadway conditions. The occupants of the vehicle were also not properly restrained when the collision occurred.

Indiana State Police continue to investigate the crash.
