Woman burned trying to put out fire in her home

A woman trying to put out a fire in her home with a blanket and a towel Friday afternoon suffered burns to her hands.

The woman, believed to be in her 70s, grabbed the blanket from a couch and a kitchen towel to smother flames in a frying pan she was using to cook onion rings, Germantown Firefighter David Herbst said.

Firefighters, dispatched to her home in the 100 block of Pollyanna Avenue just before 5 p.m., brought the burning items out of the house.

The woman was taken to Sycamore Hospital, Herbst said.

The fire was contained to the kitchen and caused minor smoke damage to the home, he said.
