17-year-old shooting suspect gives up

Accused in incident that began with fist fight, he appears at juvenile justice center.

MIAMI TWP., Montgomery County — A 17-year-old sought in a Monday morning shooting turned himself in Tuesday evening.

Otis H. Mitchell Jr., accused of wounding an 18-year-old man in the parking lot of The Conifer’s Apartment complex, in the 9300 block of Swaying Pine Court, turned himself in at the Montgomery County Juvenile Justice Center, Miami Twp. police Maj. John DiPietro said.

The Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office had approved two counts of felonious assault against Mitchell and issued an arrest warrant.

According to Miami Twp. police, Mitchell, 17, and the 18-year-old man engaged in a fist fight in the parking lot of the complex about 1 a.m. Feb. 21.

During the fight, Mitchell is accused of pulling out what police believe was a semi-automatic handgun and firing it at the 18-year-old, who was hit in his arm.

Friends took him to a hospital for a wound that was not life threatening.

The juvenile division of the prosecutor’s office said the case will be reviewed further to determine whether Mitchell should be prosecuted as an adult.

“With this case you have a demonstrated instance of gun violence, so there’s an urgency to get this person in custody and locked up. We’re happy to have him off the streets,” said DiPietro.
