The figures on job loss come from the Economic Task Force in Wilmington.
The task force also estimates 1,200 people have voluntarily left their jobs in anticipation of impending layoffs at the air park.
Next week, the task force will examine proposals for redevelopment at the air park.
Already the community has begun using $3.87 million in grant money from the U.S. Department of Labor to help people move to new careers.
“We are charting a course for the future. All workers seeking to improve themselves through retraining are part of the solution,” David Raizk, Mayor of Wilmington.
The community has opened two transition centers to help workers who have been laid off.
A third center is expected to open within the next.
