Coronavirus: Mnuchin wants stimulus money sent to dead people returned

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin is asking for the return of stimulus checks sent to dead people.

Relatives and estates were erroneously sent $1,200 checks by the government, the Wall Street Journal reported. It is unclear how many were mailed to dead recipients.

"You're not supposed to keep that payment," Mnuchin told the Journal. "We're checking the databases, but there could be a scenario where we missed something, and yes, the heirs should be returning that money."

The government has sent $160 billion worth of stimulus checks to 89 million Americans as part of a $2 trillion relief package, the Journal reported.

The payments, $1,200 for each adult and $500 for each child, are based on 2018 or 2019 tax filings. Some people who died in 2018 or 2019 received the money based on those returns.
