Dick's Sporting Goods to phase out hunting departments in over 400 stores

Dick’s Sporting Goods says it is eliminating 440 hunting departments in 2020.

The retailer made the announcement Tuesday as it reported holiday-quarter earnings and sales that beat analysts' estimates.

In 2019, Dick’s stopped selling hunting rifles and ammunition at 125 of its stores, replacing the gear with merchandise it believed would sell better at those locations.

Dick’s also made headlines in 2018 when, in the aftermath of the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, it banned the sale of assault-style rifles and the sale of all guns to anyone under 21.
