Survey shows tornadoes’ destruction across Montgomery County properties

Memorial Day twisters affected 4,434 parcels of property in Montgomery County — destroying or inflicting major damage to 915 — according to new information of the fallout assembled by the auditor’s office.

The assessment shows nearly 15% of all property parcels in Harrison Twp. sustained damage, 371 either destroyed or with major structural damage. Nearly 10% of Trotwood’s parcels, or 1,106 were affected, according to Montgomery County Auditor Karl Keith.

Keith said the new map is the most comprehensive tornado survey performed to date, outlining the extent and severity of property damage.

The auditor’s office compiled the data from the American Red Cross Dayton-area Chapter, from inspections by the City of Dayton Building Inspection and Montgomery County Building Regulations departments and by its staff members using advanced computer software.

The study noted everything from downed trees, to shingles off roofs to homes and businesses swept from foundations.
