Doctors, administrators and sports coaches top the list of the highest paid employees at Ohio State University, according to base pay data released this month by the university.
Steven Gabbe, OSU’s senior vice president for Health Sciences, tops the list at $861,492, while Athletic Director Gene Smith comes in a close second at $857,294. The figures released by OSU only include annual base salary, excluding any bonuses, overtime or other extra pay.
Gabbe, Smith and Carlo Maria Croce, who chairs the Department of Molecular Virology, Immunology and Medical Genetics, have been in the top five base pay employees for the last four years.
Head football coach Urban Meyer and head men's basketball coach Thad Matta are in the top 10 for 2013 with base pay of $758,000 and $727,000, respectively. But both men are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars more for media appearances, endorsements, performance bonuses and more.
Ohio State reported that it has 25,998 employees on the $1.78 billion payroll, not including student workers. On staff are 509 people who make more than $125,000 a year in base salary and 3,636 who are above $100,000.
Among the 35 OSU employees who make $500,000 or more are 14 professors who are listed as part-timers.
The $500,000 club is made up mostly of white men. Only two women — Business School Dean Christine Poon and Internal Medicine Prof. Clara Bloomfield — are paid a base salary of more than $500,000. Only one African-American — Smith — and one Asian — Poon — are in the group, plus two Hispanics and three people whose ethnicity was not disclosed.
Just 63 of the 338 employees making more than $250,000 — or 19 percent — are women. Among this group, women make on average 14.2 percent, $44,719, less than men.
OSU’s employee headcount has grown from 24,154 in 2010 to 24,720 in 2011 to 25,666 in 2012 to 25,998 in 2013. Over those four years, base payroll has climbed 25.3 percent.
Ohio State University is one of the largest public universities in the nation with 65,000 students, a $5 billion annual budget and a major medical center.
