Teen Arrested In St. Marys Bomb Threat

Police in St. Marys said an 18-year-old was arrested after a bomb was found at a local gas station.

Jessie McDermitt is accused of placing the device at a Marathon station. Police said around 9:12 a.m., a customer found a backpack next to a fuel pump.

Employees looked inside the bag and found what appeared to be a bomb. They called the bomb squad to defuse the device.

St. Marys Memorial High School was placed on lockdown for several hours because the gas station is located near the school.

School superintendent Mary Riepenhoff said a search of the high school and middle school turned up nothing. Students were kept inside for lunch but were free to walk around the buildings.

Investigators went to Townview Terrace Apartment to try and find McDermitt. Police said he had another bomb attached to his chest.

Investigators said the device was apparently attached to McDermitt.

According to police, both devices were real and could have caused real damage if they had detonated.

Police said they are familiar with McDermitt. In 2006, he was arrested and charged with bring a suspicious device to Wapakoneta High School.

Both devices were detonated.
