Young’s celebrating 151 years with $1.51 cones, cheeseburgers, cheese curds

Young’s Jersey Dairy is preparing to party till the cows come home in celebration of 151 years.

The family attraction at 6880 Springfield-Xenia Road near Yellow Springs is celebrating its big birthday Jan. 17-20 by offering discounts to customers.

Young’s birthday celebration is an annual event.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Dan Young, the family-owned business’ chief ice cream dipper and CEO, told us last year when Young’s celebrated a milestone 150 years. “Our local community really likes it. They can take the entire family.”

Commemorative 151st anniversary milk bottles will be free with the purchase of sundaes, ice cream cones, milkshakes or fried cheese curds while supplies last.

1869: Young family relatives built the famous red barn.

Around 1945: Hap Young bought the 60-acre farm and house shortly after the end of World War II.

1958: The family began selling fresh Jersey milk to the public.

1996: The nine position batting cage opens.

1998: The Golden Jersey Inn, a full-service restaurant, opens.

1999: Barnabe's Walnut Grove is built for picnics, reunions and other functions.

2000: A second mini golf course is added.

2008: Cowvin's Fast Slide, a 30-foot slide, opens.

2009: The family starts making Young's Farmstead Cheese.
