“I knew when I bowled that I had beaten the previous high score but I also knew there were a lot of good bowlers yet to bowl,” Ryan said.
With many shifts competing over the next week, Ryan had to wait it out until the tournament wrapped up on July 28.
“I kept looking online, I checked it every day, to see if I was still on top.”
And she was as Ryan took the all-events title in the 190-and-over female division. Ryan’s score was even high enough to have landed her in the top 10 in the male division.
“I never would have thought I would win this,” Ryan said. “And it’s amazing to think I was so close to the top of the boys’ standings.”
Ryan’s perfect summer started with a first-place finish in the Junior Masters tournament at Capri Lanes. Shortly there after, she received the prestigious Kurt Gostel Scholarship from the Greater Dayton United States Bowling Congress.
Her dream summer wraps up this weekend as the incoming freshman moves in to her new digs at Alabama State University. Ryan will bowl for the NCAA Division I Hornets this season. And while Ryan has been bowling since she was 10 years old, this will be a new experience for her.
“My high school didn’t have a bowling team so this is a first for me,” she said. “I am so excited to be a part of a team.”
Local placers: While Ryan took the title, two other Dayton area bowlers earned top-20 finishes as Sierra Kanemoto was 11th (1,778) and Kayla Cummings was 17th (1,754) in the 190-and-above all-events competition at the USBC Youth Open.
Junior Team USA member Chris Via, of Springfield, was the top Ohio all-events placer in 11th with a score of 1,914 in the 190-and-over division.
Two youth tournaments — one weekend: The Eliminator Tournament and the Wright State University Dayton Open, sponsored by the Junior Tournament Bowler's Association, will provide a full weekend of competition and scholarship opportunities for youth bowlers Sept. 1-2 at Beaver-Vu Bowl.
