Trotwood coach's suspension second in 2 years

The future of Trotwood-Madison High School football coach Maurice Douglass will be discussed following the season after his second suspension in two years, the district’s superintendent said.

“That will be addressed at the conclusion of the season,” superintendent Lowell Draffen said Monday, Sept. 28.

Draffen said it is district policy to meet with coaches following their seasons for an evaluation.

Douglass is serving a district-imposed four-game suspension that was handed down following his criticism of officials after Trotwood lost to Wayne 21-19 on Sept. 18. Douglass was absent from Trotwood’s 20-13 overtime loss to Springfield on Friday and will miss the next three games against Piqua, Sidney and Troy.

Following Trotwood’s loss to Wayne, Douglass criticized officials in an interview with the Dayton Daily News.

At the conclusion of his current punishment, Douglass will have sat out seven of Trotwood’s previous 16 games because of suspensions.

Assistant coach Jeff Graham is coaching the team in Douglass’ absence, Trotwood principal Gerald Cox said.

Douglass is serving his regular duties as an in-school suspension supervisor for Trotwood-Madison, but he’s not to have contact with the football program during his suspension, Draffen said. Douglass was also required to write a letter of apology to the officials involved, Wayne coach Jay Minton and the Greater Western Ohio Conference, Draffen said.

Last season, Douglass missed Weeks 3-5 because of a Ohio High School Athletic Association suspension that punished recruiting and eligibility issues. Before that, Douglass had been reprimanded by the district for issues including approaching a teacher about changing a grade for a student-athlete, letting nonregistered students practice with the team and warnings of recruitment practices, plus issues such as being tardy and improper use of sick leave.

“We’re expecting our people to perform well,” Draffen said. “When they don’t, there are going to be consequences associated with that.”
