Trotwood rallies in second half to thwart Thurgood Marshall upset bid

Thurgood Marshall’s bid at upsetting top-ranked Trotwood-Madison looked good after Mekhi Elmore converted to technical fouls to begin the second half that pushed the Cougars’ lead to four points.

Then Trotwood woke up.

Amari Davis put 32 points on the Cougars in leading the second-half charged Rams to a 106-84 win in a boys high school basketball Division II district final at the University of Dayton Arena on Thursday night.

The win sends Trotwood (23-2) into next Thursday’s D-II regional semifinal against Cincinnati Aiken (20-6) at 5:30 p.m. at Fairmont’s Trent Arena. Aiken advanced by taking out Alter 66-56 in Thursday’s opener. Northridge (17-7) played Cincinnati Taft (19-3) in the nightcap.

Backed by Carl Blanton’s 29 points and 16 points and as many rebounds by Justin Stephens, Trotwood wore out Thurgood with a 17-0 third-quarter run after Elmore’s free throws and the rout was on. Trotwood also defeated Thurgood 97-79 in early January.
