Snow in mid-March - or even April - not unheard of in the Miami Valley

The Miami Valley experienced noticeable snow accumulation on Monday evening and Tuesday morning after a mostly warm winter.

How rare is mid-March snow? Not as rare as you might think.

The area has seen at least 1 inch of snow 51 times on March 13 or after since 1949, according to historical weather data. It has come as late as April 17, when 1.4 inches of snow fell in 1961.

One of the recent late snowfalls came in 2013, when 5.8 inches fell on March 25.

On March 21, 2006, another later March storm dropped 1.5 inches of snow in the region.
