‘Jeopardy!’ Notebook: 5 times Dayton native super champ was stumped

After 40 enlightening, exciting games featuring superb runaway performances and a few suspenseful nailbiters, it’s difficult to fathom the end of Dayton native Amy Schneider’s phenomenal, record-breaking “Jeopardy!” winning streak.

Even so, the Chaminade-Julienne graduate has a lot to be proud of as the second all-time champ with winnings totaling nearly $1.4 million. Today, Jan. 27, she acknowledged on Twitter she’s taking the outcome in stride.

Assessing Schneider’s historic reign, let’s look at five times she was surprisingly stumped during Final Jeopardy!

DAY 30: Jan. 11, 2022

CATEGORY: Broadway Musicals

CLUE: “Each in a show that ran more than 2 years, Ethel Merman and Sarah Jessica Parker played 2 different characters with this first name.”

CORRECT ANSWER: Annie (Annie Oakley of “Annie Get Your Gun” for Merman and the titular role of “Annie” for Parker)

SCHNEIDER’S ANSWER: Rose (the stage mother from “Gypsy”)

DAY 31: Jan. 12, 2022

CATEGORY: Famous Americans

CLUE: “In 1838, he took a new last name, of a family in Walter Scott’s ‘The Lady of the Lake’; for distinction, he added a second ‘S’ to the end.”

CORRECT ANSWER: Frederick Douglass

SCHNEIDER’S ANSWER: No response

Schneider will return this fall for the Tournament of Champions where she will face Matt Amodio and other top players from the season.
