$10M inpatient hospice house to open in Troy

A new hospice center will be built on Upper Valley Medical Center’s campus.

Ohio’s Hospice broke ground today on a $10 million freestanding inpatient hospice house on the Troy hospital’s campus.

“With a new permanent home dedicated to serving the community, we will be able to serve more patients and families” said Tom Hagan, chairman of the board of directors for Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County.

The palliative and end-of-life care organization opened a seven-bed inpatient unit inside the hospital in 2014.

Those services, along with the offices at the Summit Professional Building in Troy, will move to the 32,000-square-foot hospice house when it opens late 2019.

It will be adjacent to Koester Pavilion on the north side of the hospital campus. The building initially will have 12 beds and enough space for a six-bed addition, according to a release from Upper Valley and Ohio’s Hospice.

The location will have 75 staff members and more than 125 volunteers.

The number of patients Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County serves each day doubled in three years to more than 150 patients a day, said executive director Heather Bolton.

“While most hospice patients receive care at home, in an assisted living or nursing facility environment, the need for this option of care is growing,” Bolton said.

The building will have a spa and massage room for patients, exterior doors in all patient rooms, private meeting spaces for families, a family living area and meeting space for clinical and community education programs.

This is the latest in a surge of new health care construction projects in Miami County.

Kettering Health Network also is opening a new 100,000-square-foot hospital in Troy in the summer of 2019.

Dayton Children’s Hospital is opening a Troy outpatient office that will bring smaller offices under one roof and expand services.

Wilson Health, which has a Sidney-based hospital and physician group, also announced it is expanding into Miami County with a doctor’s office in Piqua.
