New salon puts historic district at ‘100 percent occupancy’

With the addition of a new salon, a Dayton historic district is out of space.

"I am at 100 percent occupancy," Erica Hubler,  Wright Dunbar Inc. real estate director, told this news organization. "All of our lease-able space is gone — anything that someone could come in and have a business or live in is all taken."

The Wright Dunbar business district extends along West Third Street from Edwin C. Moses Boulevard to Broadway Street.

Wright Dunbar Inc., a nonprofit tasked with the management of the historic corridor on the western edge of downtown, has nine buildings.

The neighborhood is named for airplane inventors Orville and Wilbur Wright and poet Paul L Dunbar. The trio are former residents on the neighborhood.

Felicia McGuire recently signed a three-year lease for Urban Chic hair salon at 15 N. Williams.

The salon will have nine stylists and a nail technician.

It is the 26th business in Wright Dunbar, the home of the Dayton Region’s Walk of Fame.

Hubler said Marietta Flats at 1148 W. Third St. will be developed for use.

Two buildings in the district are up for sale: the Westside Chevy building at 800 W. Third St. and the Midget Theatre at 1021 to 1025 W. Third St.

Built in 1915, The Midget Theatre building housed a nickelodeon.

Wright Dunbar businesses range from financial institutions to the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park.

Urban Chic will offer chemical straightening, hair coloring, precision cuts and styles, natural hair care, braiding, advanced hair weave techniques, lash installation, facial waxing and other services.

Professional hair care products will also be sold.

“Relocating to the Wright Dunbar Business District will allow us to better serve the public by being centrally located and affording clients the opportunity to experience the rich history of the historic Wright Dunbar Business District,” said McGuire, who has more than 28 years of experience in the beauty industry.
