Plenty of bling in Yellow Springs

“Bling” is a slang term often used to refer to flashy jewelry, and it is also the title of the current exhibit at the Yellow Springs Art Council’s gallery that features hand-crafted jewelry.

The exhibit, open through Sept. 15, includes unique, hand-crafted jewelry created by seven area jewelry artists, each with a dramatically different style.

During a Friday, Aug. 16, opening reception, from 6-9 p.m., there will be wine and cheese refreshments and demonstrations.

The exhibit also features poster-sized photographs by Yellow Springs photographer Scott Stolsenberg, who photographed several Yellow Springs women modeling the jewelry.

Rounding out the exhibit, in the gallery located at 111 Corry St. in Yellow Springs, is black-and-white pottery by a Yellow Springs ceramic artist, Dianne Collinson, which will be woven into the jewelry displays.

The jewelry artists are:

• Matthew Burgy of Waynesville with miniature mobile earrings and bold ceramic pendants.

• Cassandra Graham of Dayton with intricate bead embroidery and bead weaving used to create necklaces, bracelets and rings.

• Talitha Greene of Yellow Springs, with gold, silver, copper and brass, precious and semiprecious stones transformed into sleek geometric and nature inspired pendants, earrings and rings.

• Cherry Fullam of Fairborn with wooden pendants and pins.

• Debbie Jackson of Columbus with colorful polymer clay jewelry with an “ethnic energy,” utilizing African symbols, beads, shells, feathers, Japanese papers, fabrics and cords.

• Teresa Morbitzer of Columbus with vintage vamp jewelry using antique jewelry, beads, buttons and rhinestones.

• Angela Valley of Kettering, with natural elements and gemstones sustainably transformed into sophisticated, modern jewelry designs.

Jackson, Greene, Burgy and Graham will be demonstrating their art forms during the Friday reception.
