TEDx is a global program of independently-organized events licensed by TED and it’s coming to town in an inaugural all-day event slated for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Victoria Theater. Dayton co-chair Sean Creighton says representatives from a cross-section of the community have spent a year organizing the project. Over the course of a day, more than 30 speakers and performers will appear on stage to address the theme: “Infuse and Inspire.”
To attend, you’re asked to fill out a brief application. TEDxDayton will have a student ticket, basic ticket and a sponsor ticket with proceeds helping to cover the the costs of the event.

Active Military and Veterans Receive Free Ballet, Opera and Philharmonic Tickets
Here’s exciting news for those in the military: The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is introducing its first Military Appreciation Program for active-duty military members and veterans.One hundred complimentary tickets will be available to 20 different 2013-14 Signature Season performances from Oct. 11 through Dec. 31 with a total of 2,000 tickets to performances of the Dayton Ballet, Dayton Opera and Dayton Philharmonic available.
The new program kicks off with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra’s SuperPops Series concert “Sounds of Simon and Garfunkel” on Oct. 11. In December, Melissa Manchester’s concert will be an option. Dance fans can choose to attend the Dayton Ballet’s October production, “A Range of Motion,” and December’s new production of “The Nutcracker.” In November, Dayton Opera presents Giacomo Puccini’s “Tosca.” Other free military options include the DPO’s PhilharMonster Family Concert and the festive New Year’s Eve gala concert.
Tickets are available now at Ticket Center Stage located in the Wintergarden of the Schuster Center at 1 West 2nd St. in downtown Dayton. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and two hours prior to performances. One pair of tickets per military household for this program is available for pick-up in person with a military or veterans ID.
VTA Presents Fourth Season of Mid-Day Arts Cafe
It’s time to kick-off the Mid-Day Arts Cafe, one of the most entertaining lunchtime bargains in the Miami Valley.
The fun events include an hour of entertainment and a box lunch prepared by Citilites Restaurant & Bar. The series traditionally begins with an overview of the Victoria Theatre Association’s season; this year’s kickoff event is slated for Tuesday, Sept. 13. All sessions are held in the Schuster Center’s Mathile Theatre.
This week’s opener will be hosted by Gary Minyard, the VTA’s director of education and engagement, who will introduce students from the Wright State University Musical Theatre Department under the direction of instructor Jamie Cordes. The students will share songs and short scenes from upcoming shows and conclude with a sing-a-long.
Mid-Day Arts Cafe is sponsored by the VTA and gives local arts groups the opportunity to show off their offerings.

Clark will be interim artistic director for Gay Men’s Chorus
The Dayton Gay Men’s Chorus has named Kathy Fagan Clark its interim Artistic Director.
Clark, who recently retired after 26 years at Centerville High School, was Centerville’s Vocal Music Director and has appeared in many productions in the Miami Valley. She holds a Bachelor’s in Music Education from Ohio University, and a Master’s degree from Wright State University.
In addition to her cabaret show, Clark has an album of original songs entitled “You Are My Friend”. She is currently a choir member and soloist at Dayton Westminster Presbyterian Church, and recently appeared in the Dayton Playhouse production of ‘Side by Side by Sondheim.’
One-man-band to play Fairfield
Todd Green, a multi-instrumentalist who performs on more than 30 acoustic string, flute and percussion instruments from around the world, will entertain audiences at the Fairfield Community Arts Center at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20.
Green’s custom-built electronic system allows him to layer instruments as he performs, which in effect turns him into a high-tech, one-man-band of world music.

Tonic Sol Fa slated for Sept. 23
The Miami Valley Community Concert Association (MVCCA) will present the vocal group Tonic Sol Fa at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23, in the Performing Arts Center at Centerville High School.
Tickets, available at the door, are $25 for adults and $5 for students in grades 9-12.
Fall Concert for Dayton Celebration Choir
The Dayton Celebration Choir will present its fall concert at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in downtown Dayton.
The one-hour concert is presented in conjunction with Dayton Urban Nights and will feature a variety of sacred and musical theatre selections,. The concert is free and open to the public. The church is at the corner of Fifth and Ludlow streets.
