VIDEO: From special dishes to special deals, find out what to expect during Summer Restaurant Week.

Ready your forks.

The Miami Valley Restaurant Association’s Summer Restaurant Week jump started Wednesday night during an event showcasing menu items from about 15 of the roughly 40 restaurants participating in the week-long special promotion.

Summer Restaurant Week kicks off Sunday at participating restaurants (see list below) and wraps up Aug. 4.

The smooth and slightly spicy Caribbean crab chili soup from Taste in Trotwood was among the standout sample dishes served at the sneak peek at the Dayton Art Institute, as was the upscale yet down home shrimp and grits from Fresco in Kettering.

Fresco's chef and owner Jenn DiSanto described the sauce that helps makes the dish unique as a "'holy trinity' based sauce with a little tomato in it among lots of other yummy ingredients."

On top of that, the shrimp was plump and the grits were creamy.

El Meson also did not disappoint with its sneak-peek dish, a simple, but well-cooked pork tenderloin with garlic and rice.

The renovated Oakwood Tavern at Neil's Hertitage House brought its seafood paella.

Serena Walther Leventhal, granddaughter of the restaurant’s founder, Neil Swafford, said her husband has worked hard to refine the dish’s recipe.

“We are all about craft — from craft beer to crafting our food perfectly to crafting our cocktails by muddling basil and (using) fresh juices,” Leventhal said.

Amy Zahora, the MVRA’s executive director, urged area residents to eat their way through the week.

“It is a great way for them (area residents) to try some new restaurants in the area or to try a restaurant they have never tried before at a really good price,” she said.

A dollar from each meal purchased will benefit the Cancer Support community of Western Ohio and MVRA’s scholarship program. MVRA has donated nearly $50,000 to charities due to the restaurant week efforts the past two years, Zahora noted.

Three-course meals and meal deals will be sold for $20.13, $25.13 and $30.13.

Stan McKnight of Dayton and his sister Tina Porter of Oakwood couldn’t wait to hit the restaurants.

McKnight said the boneless chicken from Crazy Mango Bar and Bistro at The Greene in Beavercreek and the Shrimp and tilapia ceviche from Salar Restaurant and Lounge in Dayton's Oregon District were her hits of the preview party.

“I am a big fan of Salar. Salar has a nice blend.    I was there just last night,” he said. “I love their spin and their cuisine.”
