Funk music will get you moving at Fitton Center this weekend

The Just Strange Brothers Band return to the Fitton Center for Creative Arts this weekend for Kickin’ Some Brass — a show that will feature a 12-piece band, including a five-piece horn section and singers.

The concert will pay tribute to bands like Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire, Sly & the Family Stone and more.

Here’s what you can expect Saturday night:

1. An upbeat evening

Music from some of the best bands that have featured horn sections will be performed, according to Danny Manning, who sings and plays saxophone and horn in Just Strange Brothers.

That includes music made famous from bands like Earth, Wind & Fire and Chicago, as well as funk artists who got their start in Cincinnati like the Ohio Players and James Brown.

“It will be a lot of fun, you can get up and dance, and every song will feature the horn section,” Manning said.

2. There’s no such thing as a bad seat

Just Strange Brothers has played the Fitton Center before, with the successful David Bowie and sold-out Women of Rock! shows.

“It’s a really cool space to get to play a live music show, because the audience is right there, and there aren’t any bad seats in the house,” Manning said. “It’s very immersive. (The Fitton Center0 tech staff is phenomenal, and it sounds great in there for us and for the audience.”

3. Prepare for something new

Just Strange Brothers features a rotating lineup of performers, something that allows it to perform from any genre of music: from Led Zeppelin to a Parliament-Funkadelic tribute to Stevie Wonder, Manning said.

“We draw from some of the most talented, younger players in town. For instance, our bass player is a bass professor at (University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music), and lots of our players are either teachers or recent graduates of CCM,” he said.

The band rotates between different players, depending on the type of music it is performing.

“You might see Strange Brothers, and it might be a completely different band than you saw the last time…” Manning said.
