UD will stage Dorothy Stang opera
“Angel of the Amazon,” an opera that celebrates the life and service of Sister Dorothy Stang, will be performed at the University of Dayton’s Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11. Composed by Evan Mack, the opera will feature the UD Chorale directed by Robert Jones.
Born and raised in Dayton, Stang joined the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur at 17. She spent nearly four decades as a missionary in Brazil, where she became a naturalized citizen. She lived in primitive conditions in the rain forest, taught peasants sustainable farming techniques and fought illegal logging and ranching. She was shot to death in Brazil, on Feb. 12, 2005, as part of a land dispute over the displacement of peasants.
The University of Dayton granted Stang an honorary degree a year after her death, and in 2008, the United Nations named her a Human Rights Prize recipient.
“The opera’s mission is to connect people to Sister Dorothy’s story on an emotional level,” said Mack. “My hopes are that through the power of storytelling and music, audiences will make a greater bond to Dorothy’s story and life work helping the poor. The performance in Dayton will be very special since it is where she was raised.”
Mezzo Soprano Tascha Anderson will sing the role of Sister Dorothy. Baritone Jose Rubio reprises his role as Luiz from the original NYC production. The event is free, with a suggested contribution of $10.
