Man ejected after car hits tree, splits in half in Dayton

Driver suffers serious, but not life-threatening injuries, police say.

A man suffered serious, but not life-threatening injuries Tuesday morning after a car hit a tree and then splits in half in Dayton.

The driver, a 40-year-old Dayton man, was ejected in the crash reported at 9:21 a.m. in the 1700 block of South Gettysburg Avenue near Nicholas Road, according to a Dayton Police Department crash report.

“Upon arrival crews located a badly damaged vehicle that was wrapped around a tree,” Dayton police Sgt. Creigee S. Coleman said. “After further investigation, they located a male outside on the ground who needed care.”

The Dayton Fire Department took the crash victim, Patrick Jeter, to Miami Valley Hospital. He was the only occupant and his injuries following the crash were described as serious but not life-threatening.

The Dayton Fire Department took the crash victim, Patrick Jeter, to Miami Valley Hospital. He was the only occupant and his injuries following the crash were described as not life-threatening.

The silver 2013 Chevrolet Impala was headed north on South Gettysburg Avenue when the driver apparently lost control, drove onto the grass median and then slammed into a tree. The impact caused the car to split into multiple parts, with pieces of the car landing in the southbound lanes of South Gettysburg Avenue, the crash report stated.

The Dayton Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating the cause of the crash.

“There were no witnesses on scene,” Coleman said. “At this point in time, without interviewing the person who was outside the vehicle, it’s hard to determine if it was speed or if alcohol was a factor in this crash.”

He noted that people who live in the area often report motorists speeding, but no one reported hearing any screeching tires or revving engines prior to the crash Tuesday morning.

“They just happened to look out and saw this,” he said.

Coleman said investigators will check if there’s any video or surveillance camera footage of the crash.

Anyone who was in the area of South Gettysburg Avenue and Nicholas Road at the time of the crash or who has any information is asked to call Dayton police at 937-333-COPS or Montgomery County Regional Dispatch at 937-225-HELP.
