Interim Chief Carper retires after 29 years with Dayton Police Department

Dayton Police Department Interim Chief Matt Carper retired Friday after 29 years with the department.

He served as the interim chief and police director since late July after former chief Richard Biehl returned, and was one of the finalists to be selected as the new chief.

Prior to serving as the interim chief, Carper held a number of leadership positions, including assistant chief and chief of operations as well as commander of the narcotics bureau, Professional Standards Bureau and the central patrol and west patrol operations divisions.

He also was given multiple awards, this year including the Exemplary Leadership Award from the DPD, awarded before former chief Biehl retired.
