Tornado warnings were issued in multiple area counties on Sunday evening as a line of storms moved through the area.
Thousands were left without power in the region because of the storms. AES Ohio reported more than 5,500 customers without power around 9 p.m. on Sunday. AES crews in Christiansburg said power was restored to most village residents by 5 a.m. Monday.
There were reports of multiple trees down in Christiansburg, Champaign County, and a house in Tipp City in Miami County had roof damage, according to NWS.
Starting at about 7:15 p.m., tornado warnings were issued in Clark, Miami and Montgomery counties. A later tornado warning was added in Champaign County.
Kurt Emerick, a Christiansburg resident, said there were a lot of high winds he could hear at first.
“Looked out and saw everything just kind of rotating a little bit and then it was all over in about a minute. But yeah, it was pretty high winds and stuff,” he said. “It took out a lot of trees and things.”
Emerick said there was no damage to their house from the winds.
“We were really fortunate,” he added.
Pat Schaefer, who also lives in Christiansburg, said it was raining when he went to the store.
The town was torn up when he got back, Schaefer said.
“Trees down. Branches down. Stuff flying everywhere,” Schafer said. “I don’t know if it were a straight line or a tornado, but it looked like a straight line.”
Storms also knocked down large branches and trees in Montgomery, Warren and Champaign counties. The NWS received reports of a large branch down in Carlisle, Warren County, and a large tree downed in Huber Heights in Montgomery County. Several outbuildings at Carlisle High School in Warren County were reportedly damaged as well.
