Trooper struck, seriously hurt directing traffic on US 35 in Greene County

A trooper was seriously injured after he was struck Friday morning while directing traffic after a crash involving a commercial vehicle on U.S. 35 East in Beavercreek Twp.

Trooper Paul Coates of the Xenia Post was walking in the intersection of U.S. 35 and Orchard Lane when he was hit at 6:15 a.m. by a 2011 BMW 335i driven by Tyler L. Boatman, 24, according to a release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Coates was wearing reflective safety vest, and his cruiser had its emergency lights activated, which was a short distance from where he was struck, the patrol said.

Coates suffered serious injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.

Boatman was not injured.

No citations have been issued and the crash remains under investigation.
