A man suffered third-degree burns to his back Thursday during a house fire in Jefferson Twp.

Crews were called shortly after noon to the house in the 7800 block of Dayton-Liberty Road.

“One of the occupants was in the back of the house. He had a propane torch and we’re not for sure what happened, but the occupant has got third-degree burns on his back,” said Chief Doug Wright of the Jefferson Twp. Fire Department.

The victim was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where his condition is not known.

Another person also was in the house who was not injured, Wright said.

The fire quickly spread and the house was destroyed.

“The house is a total loss,” Wright said, with estimated damages of $60,000 to the structure and contents.

Wright said it’s not clear what happened that led to the fire because he has not yet been able to interview the two people inside at the time.
