Ex-coach guilty in sex case

Former Xenia counselor faces up to five years in prison.

XENIA — Former high school counselor and coach Brenda Osborne must surrender her teaching license and faces five years in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday, March 30, to one count of sexual battery of a teenage student athlete.

Osborne, 43, was originally charged in September with three counts of sexual battery, a third-degree felony, after she admitted during a police interview that she had sexual contact with a student.

In a plea deal with prosecutors, Osborne admitted to one count, agreed to give up her teaching licenses and will register as a tier three sex offender. She resigned from her post at Xenia High School, where she worked as a counselor and coach of the volleyball and basketball teams, in October after being put on paid leave.

Police and school officials said a tip led them to begin an investigation into Osborne’s conduct from incidents that occurred between July 1 and Sept. 2, 2008, that did not happen on school grounds. Nichole Burke, assistant Greene County prosecutor, said Osborne was charged with sexual battery because she took advantage of her position of authority.

Osborne is a 17-year veteran of the Xenia district where she has taught gym and health and also coached basketball.

Osborne faces as much as five years in prison and a $10,000 fine, but could receive five years probation. She is scheduled for sentencing June 30.
