Grand jury indicts man in January 2009 homicide, police search for suspect

DAYTON — A Montgomery County grand jury has indicted Derek Lamont Wilson in the Jan. 24, 2009, death of his girlfriend, and police are searching for the 46-year-old man.

Police found Leanet McGeee, 33, dead about 5 a.m. on the floor inside the home she shared with Wilson at 2618 N. Main St. Wilson said he came home to find McGee on the floor, according to a recording of his call to 911. Wilson was arrested later that day. He was released from jail two days later after prosecutors declined to approve charges because there was not enough evidence.

The grand jury Wednesday indicted Wilson on murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence charges. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued. As of Friday morning, police were still searching for the man.

Greg Flannagan, spokesman for the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office, declined to say what new evidence triggered presenting the case to the grand jury.

Police records show a history of domestic violence involving the couple.

In August 2003, McGee told police she tried to leave Wilson before, but he beat her “severely for it,” according to a police report. McGee said she never followed through with charges against Wilson because she feared for her safety. Shortly thereafter, Wilson stole her car and disappeared for days, according to police. McGee did not press charges.

McGee called police Jan. 14, 2009, and said Wilson had beat her on her birthday, which was the day before, according to police reports.

McGee’s family said the woman was planning to leave Wilson and move out of state to start a new life.
