Jury convicts car thief in ’08 fatal wreck

DAYTON — A 24-year-old man accused of killing one person and injuring three others while driving a stolen car was convicted of all charges Tuesday after more than two days of jury deliberations.

Antwan Rhines, 24, was convicted of aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and receiving stolen property, all felonies, as well as a misdemeanor count of failure to stop after an accident.

Visiting Judge David Gowdown set sentencing for Nov. 16.

Rhines was accused of causing the Dec. 12, 2008, accident that killed Dwayne Bullock, 31. His wife, brother and sister-in-law suffered extensive injuries in the crash.

Defense attorney Jeff Rezabek argued that Rhines was a passenger in the car driven by Runyon Yarbrough, who testified for the prosecution.

Rezabek never put on any witnesses.

Bullock’s family members testified that they had just left dinner in the Oregon District when the stolen Chevrolet Malibu hit Bullock’s Grand Prix at Main and Washington streets.

The Malibu had just come off U.S. 35 and ran two red lights in an attempt to flee from police after making an illegal U-turn, assistant county prosecutor Jason Cavinder said.

Bullock suffered a severed aorta and a near instantaneous death in the collision, Chief Deputy Coroner Lee Lehman testified.

Dayton police Detective Derric McDonald testified that according to his calculations, the Malibu was traveling at 76 mph one second before the accident.

A limo driver who testified that he saw a man climb out of the driver’s side and flee the wreck, followed the man in his limo to near the Dayton Convention Center, then called 911.

Minutes later, a police officer arrested Rhines, who was limping.

The trial in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court began Oct. 18. The jury began deliberating Friday afternoon and broke that evening for the weekend. The jury deliberated nearly eight hours Monday, then resumed their duties Tuesday morning.
