Local police chief’s wife charged a 2nd time for theft

For the second time in a year, the wife of Riverside’s police chief has been charged with stealing from a store, this time in Ottawa County, Mich.

Christine Reiss, wife of Chief Mark Reiss, has been charged with third-degree misdemeanor retail fraud, according to the Ottawa County Clerk’s office. Retail fraud is taking merchandise from a local store. She is scheduled to appear April 28, in the 58th District Court in West Olive, Mich.

Christine Reiss, 41, of Oakwood, is currently on two years probation for an April 2009 conviction for stealing $138 in merchandise from the Von Maur store at The Greene. On Feb. 1, 2009, she was stopped by store security after stealing three items, according to police and court records.

According to court records, she pleaded no contest to misdemeanor theft and given an 180-day suspended sentence, plus the probation.

In the latest incident, Christine Reiss was cited Saturday, April 17, by a Spring Lake-Ferrysburg police officer. Details of the incident will not be released until after her court appearance, court officials said.

Mark Reiss said the incident was a personal family matter that does not affect his role as chief.

“I care for my wife and children very, very deeply,” the chief said Wednesday, April 21. “This incident does not impact that caring.”

“This personal issue,” Riverside City Manager Bryan Chodkowski said, “does not impact his position of police chief. This is an unfortunate personal issue for the police chief to deal with.”

On April 21, 2009, Christine Reiss pleaded no contest to misdemeanor theft in the Von Maur case. Fairborn Municipal Judge Beth Root ordered her to pay a $200 fine and restitution and placed her on two years probation.
