Man stabbed over campfire at homeless camp

A 55-year-old man was stabbed in the chest late Saturday night during an argument at what Dayton police characterized as a homeless camp.

The man was listed as a patient Sunday at Miami Valley Hospital, but his condition was not being released.

Police responded at approximately 10 p.m. to the 1000 block of Gateway Drive near Setter's Bar and found a bloody, intoxicated white male sitting on the tailgate of a pickup, according to the incident report.

The man had a cut wound in his chest area. He claimed he was stabbed by a woman in the woods, but he was in-and-out of consciousness and his story changed during the interview with police, according to the report.

Police said medics deemed the man's injuries as "life-threatening."

No suspect was found at the scene, but officers followed a trail of blood back to a makeshift cabin.

Moments later, the alleged suspect's boyfriend called 911 to report the incident.

He told police he and his girlfriend were in the cabin when she confronted two men about their nearby campfire.

Words were exchanged and the boyfriend said he believed she cut the man or tried to cut him, according to the report.

The suspect was "at large" with no current address and police had not located her or made any arrests early in the investigation.
