Police: Man menaced mailman for walking in yards

Police in Dayton arrested a man on Saturday after he allegedly chased his mailman with a stick and threatened to hit him with it.

Police took Damon Smith, 41, into custody without incident near the 1200 block of Wyoming Street, according to a Dayton Police report.

The mailman told police this was the third time Smith followed him and tried to assault him after delivering mail to his home, according to the report.

Smith is upset because the mailman walks through yards to deliver mail, according to the police report.

The victim told police the suspect has become more aggressive toward him over the last few weeks.

Smith allegedly followed the mailman a block from his home on Demphle Avenue to an area near Wyoming Street and St. Paul Avenue. Smith ran up behind the mailman with a stick used to pick up garbage and yelled that he was going to hit him and knock out all of his teeth, according to the report.

The mailman dropped his mail and tried to get away from Smith, the report stated.

A woman who lives on Wyoming Street saw Smith run up to the mailman and swing a stick at him. She corroborated the victim’s statement of what happened, according to the report.

Smith was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on suspicion of menacing, but he was released the next day.
