Police said the woman suffered minor injuries during the incident reported sometime after 2 p.m. at the Wind Ridge Apartments, 599 Wind Ridge Place, off North Hyatt Street. Tipp City police and the Miami County Sheriff’s Office as well as special weapons and tactics and K-9 units responded to the complex. After a two-hour search, the teen was found sitting at a nearby playground, where he gave himself up, Tipp City detective Sgt. Chris Graham said.
“We had a report of a some type of clothing object over top of an elderly female’s head, perhaps being held against her will,” Graham said.
The youth was taken to a juvenile detention facility in Troy. Preliminary charges against him are kidnapping, felonious assault and aggravated burglary, Graham said.
The woman suffered superficial injuries and was checked by a medic at the scene, Graham said. She and the teen have no known connection, but are neighbors who live in the same building, he said.
The teen has no indication of a criminal history, the sergeant said, and it’s unknown what led to the incident.
Keith Huelskamp, co-owner of the Wind Ridge Apartments, said the woman was a longtime resident, and that when her son came home during the incident the teen fled. Huelskamp, who called it an isolated incident, said there were no prior complaints about the boy he called “a very quiet young man.”
The incident alarmed many residents, who said the complex is normally peaceful.
“It was kind of scary coming back (home) … I’ve never really had an experience like this before so I really didn’t know what to do,” said Logan Blankenship.
UPDATE @ 4:59 p.m.
The situation at the Wind Ridge Apartments appears to be over as law enforcement has left the property.
Tipp City police advised our crew they will provide information about the incident during a press conference at the police station.
FIRST REPORT
SWAT officers as well as Miami County deputies and Tipp City police are gathered at an apartment building this afternoon.
It appears to be a standoff happening at at 2:30 p.m. at the Wind Ridge Apartments, 599 Wind Ridge Place off of North Hyatt Street.
