1 shot on Sunset Avenue in Springfield

UPDATE @ 5:22 p.m.

A Springfield man was shot in the foot Monday afternoon in a drive-by shooting in the 1600 block of Sunset Avenue, according to police.

Diron Upshaw, 35, was treated at Springfield Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, said Springfield Police Chief Stephen Moody.

Multiple shots were fired from a dark-colored sport utility vehicle in the area at about 12:45 p.m. Upshaw heard the shots fired and jumped on the ground, Moody said. Once the shooting ended, he noticed the wound to his foot.

It’s unclear who was being targeted in the shooting, Moody said.

The shooting comes less than a week after four people were taken into custody for a string of drive-by shootings that left homes and cars with bullet holes throughout the south side of Springfield last Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. The same group also led police on a chase into South Charleston, which led to school being closed in the village Wednesday.

The Springfield City School District placed its schools on secured facility status Wednesday due to the shootings. Secured facility status is not a lock down, but rather means that all standard indoor activities, including instruction in the classroom, continue as normal. However, outdoor activities, including recess, were not permitted for the remainder of the day.

Warder Park/Wayne Elementary School was placed on a similar status Friday afternoon after shots were heard fired in the area.

Moody did not comment on whether Monday’s shooting was related to last week’s incidents. Local leaders are working to communicate a message to those involved in the recent violence, he added.

“It’s troubling that we’re not able to reach out to these young guys and get a point across and try to sit down and talk to them, but we’re going to continue to work these cases and prosecute those who are involved,” Moody said.

UPDATE @ 1:35 p.m.

One male was shot and taken to the hospital, according to a Springfield police supervisor.
