Son charged in thumb-biting behind bars

NEW MIAMI — A man who served a 10-day jail stint was back in custody hours later after allegedly biting off his father’s thumb during a domestic dispute Tuesday, Sept. 7.

Edwin Bowling, 27, is charged with felonious assault and domestic violence. He was booked into the Butler County Jail at 11:13 a.m. Wednesday, according to jail records. He is being held without bond.

Bowling allegedly bit off the tip of this father’s thumb during a dispute aound 9:30 p.m. at their South Riverside Drive residence. Bowling fled after the incident, but was arrested when he returned home just before midnight Tuesday, said New Miami police Chief Kenneth Cheek.

His father, Howard Bowling, 65, refused to be transported to the hospital for treatment, Cheek said.

The incident followed the younger Bowling’s release from Butler County Jail at 11 a.m. Tuesday after serving 10 days on charges of theft, failure to appear in court and open container, said Mike Gibson, a corrections officer.
