Springfield police arrest PNC Bank robbery suspect

Police recovered all the cash stolen from PNC Bank and arrested a suspect shortly after the heist.

The suspect, identified as John E. Griffith II, stopped after officers on patrol found him driving in the area of Clark and Wiley streets, said Sgt. Doug Pergram of the Springfield Police Division.

“The driver, who was the only one in it, matched the suspect description,” the sergeant said.

Griffith is accused of entering the bank shortly after 11 a.m. at 2025 E. Main St.

“He filled out a deposit slip, handed the deposit slip to a teller and stated, ‘this is a robbery,’ ” Pergram said.

The suspect did not display a weapon, and there were no injuries reported.

After he was pulled over, police took Griffith back to the bank, where employees identified him as the robber, Pergram said.

Griffith, who has previous addresses in Springfield, Urbana and Harrison Twp. in Montgomery County, is held without bond on suspicion of robbery, a felony charge, and is awaiting arraignment Monday morning, online Clark County Jail records show.

Police in Springfield arrested a man today suspected of robbing the PNC Bank, 2025 E. Main St.

The robber didn’t display a weapon when he demanded cash at the bank shortly after 11 a.m., according to police.

A search was conducted after the robbery was reported and officers were able to arrest a suspect.
