Student hurt in scuffle with Dayton security officer

Dayton school officials are investigating an incident in which a student was hurt during a scuffle with a security officer after he wouldn't give up his earphones.

Police responded at 11:15 a.m. to Longfellow School, 245 Salem Ave., and found the 14-year-old student in handcuffs in the principal's office.

Blood was on the front of the student's clothing, his lip was bloody and swollen and he complained that two of his teeth were loose, according to a Dayton police report.

The injuries were caused when the student's face banged into a computer as he struggled to get free from a security officer, according to the report.

The security officer restrained the student after he refused to give up his earphones.

The security officer told police the earphones were visible and thus in violation of school policy, according to the report.

The student told police he fought with the security officer at his last school, which caused him to be placed at Longfellow.

Longfellow is an alternative school in Dayton Public Schools district. Students are placed there by an administrator as an alternative to expulsion, according to Jill Moberley, Dayton schools spokeswoman.

District officials are still investigating the incident to determine if the security officer's actions were appropriate and whether the student will be disciplined, Moberley said.

The district's code of conduct stipulates that students are not to use electronic devices during school hours.

Moberley said principals have leeway in terms of enforcement and that district leaders are reevaluating the electronic device policy as they do every year to make sure it's relevant.
