Suspected copper thief gets trip to hospital

A suspected copper thief discovered in a warehouse Tuesday night earned a trip to a hospital after an encounter with a Dayton police K-9.

The dog was sent inside the former Hewitt Soap Co. Inc., 333 Linden Ave., to force out the man police said was inside attempting to steal copper.

The owner of the building, who asked to be identified only as Brett, said he was at his office nearby when he received an alert from a security company about an open door at the warehouse. Brett said he and another employee noticed that some property had been taken. That was earlier in the day.

Tuesday evening, he received a second call from the security company and believed the passing storms may have set off an alarm. He went to the warehouse and heard noises from the area where he thought a break-in had occurred. Brett said that's when he called police.

Police arrived on scene at about 9:15 p.m. and surrounded the warehouse, covering all the entrances.

An officer on scene, when asked whether police believed there were two other suspects inside, said police believe they got the only person who was in the building.

The man placed under arrest was taken to Miami Valley Hospital. The extent of his injuries were not immediately revealed by officers at the scene. He'll be taken to the Montgomery County Jail after he's treated.
