Text messages on teen's phone lead to arrests, importuning charges

TIPP CITY — Text messages on a girl’s cell phone helped police apprehend two Dayton-area men who came to town late last week, allegedly to meet the 15-year-old for sex.

The girl’s mother approached police after reading alleged messages from the men to her daughter, police Chief Tom Davidson said Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Information in the text messages was used to contact the men who were arrested Thursday, Aug. 20, and Friday, Aug. 21. Police said they came to an address they apparently thought was being provided by the girl, but actually was used in a set up by investigators.

Marc Burns, 35, of Beavercreek, and Alonzie Wright Jr., 41, of Dayton, were arrested by police on one felony each of importuning.

Burns and Wright both were released on recognizance bonds following arraignments in Miami County Municipal Court. They pleaded not guilty.

Wright’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 1. A hearing for Burns was scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 25, but continued until Sept. 8.

County sheriff’s Capt. Dave Duchak said he and the department’s school resource officers encourage parents to monitor their children’s electronic communications.

“Parents need to be nosey. That is their job,” Duchak said. Technology has made it where parents need to be more vigilant.”

The sheriff’s office will provide educational programs on technology for parents or other groups. Anyone interested in a program, or more information can call Duchak at (937) 440-6085.
