Outstanding alumni honored

The 2014 Outstanding Alumnus inductees for the Mad River School District and Stebbins High School were honored during a ceremony Oct. 10. Outstanding Alumni serve as role models for current and future Stebbins High School students. The inductees included Linda O’Keefe, The University of Dayton-Sinclair Community College (class of 1965); Miles Scully, Ohio University-Gordon Reese Scully Mansukhani LLP (class of 1980); and Donna Glowacki, Miami University-The University of Notre Dame (class of 1987).

STEM activities

STEM activities continue to be the theme for student learning at Mad River Middle School. One hundred eighth graders recently went on a tour of a Dayton manufacturing facility for National Manufacturing Day. Students were able to see what kind of jobs and tools a manufacturing company has to offer. Select Industries welcomed students from Dayton area local schools to the factory to learn about the die cut machines used to create parts for cars. A variety of enrichment classes are also under way at MRMS.

STEM/Education Showcase

The Mad River School District held its third annual STEM/Education Showcase at Stebbins High School Oct. 22. Over 100 students and their parents walked the halls of the high school to learn about school activities, family resources, student services and STEM and Career Tech courses. Representatives from Wright State University, Sinclair Community College and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base were on hand to talk about programs for students and their families.

Volunteers help ‘Make Strides’

Forty-six Air Force Junior ROTC cadets and Stebbins High School LEO Club members volunteered at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Oct. 18. The event is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and was held at Fifth Third Field in downtown Dayton. The cadets and club members assisted the many thousands of participants with setting up and taking down tables and chairs, clean up, and serving refreshments.

Band wins invitational in Versailles

The Stebbins High School Marching Band won the Versailles OMEA Band Invitational Oct. 11. Stebbins earned first place in its class and won best color guard, best percussion, best overall visual, best overall general effect, and received the highest score out of all 13 bands at the competition. At the end of the evening, Stebbins was presented with the Grand Champion Trophy. The band also received a Superior Rating from every judge at the contest, giving the band its second overall Superior Rating of the season. The Superior Rating at Versailles is the band’s 18th consecutive Superior Rating at an OMEA sanctioned event.

Seniors blog as part of class project

Senior students in Eric Spahr's information technologies class are once again taking to the Internet to blog about their senior experiences. Eight students are writing about their daily experiences as a high school senior every week. The students are posting to the school blog throughout the year, sharing their writings, as well other projects they create. Choir to perform at Schuster

Stebbins’ Symphonic Choir will perform with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra at “The Music of Elton John: Jeans ‘n Classics concert” at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Schuster Center. The students will be under the direction of Dr. Patrick Reynolds, assistant conductor.
