Cedarville honors military

Cedarville University will honor the military during a Veterans Day program at 10 a.m. Friday in the Dixon Ministry Center. The university plans to honor all branches of the military at the one-hour event.

Maj. Gen. Dondi Costin, chief of chaplains for the United States Air Force, will headline the event as its main speaker.

Costin is from Wilmington, North Carolina, and is a member of the special staff of the Air Force’s chief of staff. As the chief of chaplains, he serves as the top pastor for more than 664,000 active-duty, guard, reserve and civilians serving in the armed forces in the country and abroad.

“It is good to pay honor to whom honor is due,” said Beth Porter, who organized the event and serves as chair of the department of music and worship.

Funding research

UD has been awarded a grant for $201,600 from the national Clare Boothe Luce Program of the Henry Luce Foundation to fund science, technology, engineering and math undergraduate research opportunities for women.

The grant will support the research of eight students during their second and third years of school, with an eye on preparing them for graduate study and careers in research or academics. Students will perform 10 hours of research per week during the school year and 20 hours per week during the summer.

Each of the eight students will receive up to $25,200 for their research, according to the university.

Record high

Miami University achieved its highest rate of first-year student retention in 25 years.

Miami reported a 92 percent retention rate of first-year students from fall 2015 to fall 2016, an increase of 1.5 percent over last year, according to the university.

Miami credited the high rate to improved academic advising, increased support and programming and early career preparation.

WSU promotion

Wright State University has named Kelli Tittle director of compliance. Among her duties will be coordinating compliance activities and compliance training across campus, conducting yearly compliance audits and overseeing the university’s anonymous reporting line.

Tittle previously served as Wright State’s HIPAA and privacy compliance officer in the Office of the Vice President for Research.

Kristallnacht ceremony

UD invites the public to a candlelight ceremony at 5 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Chaminade Chapel to remember the “Night of Broken Glass,” the event historians identify as the beginning of the Holocaust. The university’s World Music Choir will be part of the ceremony.
