Duck Dynasty just part of student’s dream internship

Students don’t always land the perfect internship, but Wright State University’s Brian Bok was able to find his dream job last summer.

The Wright State University communication studies major spent his time scouting for all kinds of talent, working for fashion industries and spending time with singers, songwriters and the cast of Duck Dynasty. Bok handled social media, advertising, public relations and promotions for Corello, a fashion line based in Nashville, Tenn., that works on video and photo shoots with artists.

“I had so much fun,” Bok said. “I got to personally help the cast members on photo shoots and worked closely with them. I was most excited about my chance to attend the CMA (Country Music Association) Awards, where I got to sit near the stage and see the nominees as they entered and exited.”

Bok, who grew up in Bellbrook and graduated from Bellbrook High School, said the courses he took at WSU that were focused on communicating via social media were key to his ability to land the internship and be successful.

“I had taken a lot of communication classes during my years at Wright State, but a social media class I took right before getting my internship definitely sparked my interest and encouraged me to look at internships in that field,” he said. “While working with Corello, I was always remembering tips that I had learned from my classes at Wright State, like how important it is to properly represent yourself using social media, and I wanted to use that to properly represent others as well.”

Bok’s love of music and the music industry added to his excitement about the internship.

“I have always been passionate about both music and fashion,” he said. “When I heard about an internship that was a combination of those, I was ecstatic.”

After accepting the internship and moving to Nashville for the summer, Bok was asked to work with Corello’s branding company — Deadhorse Designs — where he got the opportunity to intern as a talent scout. This opportunity involved attending small, local shows and watching for bands and artists who had the talent Corello was looking for.

Following his work with Deadhorse, Bok went on to work with Nashville-based singers and songwriters, handling social media and promoting events. His summer ended with the opportunity to promote the popular series Duck Dynasty, which included promoting the clothing line and general sales. While doing this, Bok received the opportunity to participate in photo shoots and other promotional events with the cast and crew.

“The internship opened up opportunities to network and meet new people,” Bok said. “Just that alone has opened up job opportunities.”
