Ex-FilmDayton director hired to lead DVAC

Eva Buttacavoli succeeds Jane Black, who left for DAI post.

DAYTON — The Dayton Visual Arts Center has named Eva Buttacavoli its new executive director. Previously director of FilmDayton, she succeeds Jane Black, who left DVAC in August to become associate director of the Dayton Art Institute.

Buttacavoli came to Dayton in 2009 after serving as director of education for the Austin Museum of Art and co-founding the education department at the Miami Art Museum. She has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art history and art education from Florida International University.

As its first director, she helped establish the fledgling FilmDayton after heading teacher programs for the Dayton-based arts education organization the Muse Machine.

She said her new position will serve her “professional and personal passions of building resources for artists and cultivating an audience for contemporary art.”

DVAC, 118 N. Jefferson St., Dayton, will host a reception to introduce her from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2.

Founded in 1991 by a coalition of Dayton-area artists, art supporters, and visual arts professionals, the gallery and art center presents contemporary exhibits that introduce and promote visual artists who live and work in the Dayton region.

With revenue of $366,547, it finished the year ending June 30, 2011, in the black for the 19th year in a row. More than 43 percent of earnings were from the sale of art. Memberships accounted for more than 10 percent.

DVAC board president Joel Whitaker announced Buttacavoli’s appointment on Thursday. Her salary was not disclosed. Black was paid $58,054 in 2009-10.

Megan Cooper is the current director of FilmDayton.

DVAC is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and from 5 to 8 p.m. on monthly First Fridays. For more information, call (937) 224-3822 or go to daytonvisualarts.org.
