The towels had been taken out of the dryer and placed in a basket about an hour before the blaze, which caused an estimated $500 in damages to the facility, said Middletown fire Capt. David Adams.
The combination of heat and likely traces of oil from the kitchen on the towels caused the towels to “spontaneously combust,” he said.
Smoke was visible from outside the structure when crews arrived, but Adams said firefighters had the blaze contained in about 10 minutes.
“There was a lot of smoke confined to one area, but no one was injured,” Adams said.
Spring Hills residents were evacuated from the facility as a precaution, but none was ever in danger, Adams said.
Spring Hill officials declined comment.
