How sweet it is: Plenty of maple syrup at Narrows

One sweet winter tradition is maple sugaring at the Narrows Nature Reserve, 2575 Indian Ripple Road.

Greene County Parks naturalists tap the park’s maple trees, boil down the sap into maple syrup and share it with the public during a pancake breakfast.

During this year’s breakfast, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. March 6, maple syrup will be sold, along with a recipe booklet featuring the Maple Syrup Cooking Contest recipes.

Samples of dishes, and full recipes, using maple syrup to create “the most incredible, delectable treats” can be dropped off at Greene County Parks, 651 Dayton-Xenia Road in Xenia, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Feb. 25-26 or at the Narrows Nature Center from 8 a.m. to noon Feb. 27.

The winner will receive four free breakfasts and a gallon of maple syrup.

The breakfast costs $5 for Greene County residents and $7 for nonresidents ages 7 and older; $3 for residents and $5 for nonresidents ages 3-6 and free for children younger than 3 years old.

The breakfast is also free for families that rent a sugar bucket for $50.

A maple tree is tapped and its bucket is labeled with the name of the family, which can visit the camp to see how much sap their bucket is collecting.

New this year, a special brunch will be served at a private setting in the sugar grove for groups of four to eight. Reservations are required and are available for 8:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. seatings. The cost is $10 per Greene County resident and $12 per nonresident.

Sugar camp tours, costing $2 for residents and $3 for nonresidents ages 6 and older and free for children younger than 6, will be available throughout the day, with the last walk beginning at 2 p.m. The trails are not stroller or handicap accessible

For groups of 10 or more, private tours are available weekdays from Feb. 16 through March 10.

March 6 parking will be at the Russ Research Center, just west of the Narrows on Indian Ripple Road, with free shuttle service. Only handicap parking will be available at the Narrows Reserve Nature Center.
